The Ornaments on the Tree: What We Miss When We Focus on Appearances
Themes: Quality of life, present/mindfulness, coping skills
Helpful for: Anxiety, depression, trauma
In our modern world, it can be easy to get lost in appearances. Like a Christmas tree overloaded with ornaments, we often add layers upon layers of optics to present a polished, curated version of ourselves to the outside world. But what happens when there are so many ornaments that we lose sight of the tree itself? Imagine a tree covered with dazzling decorations — glittering balls, twinkling lights, and elaborate garlands. It’s beautiful, yes, but with so much focus on the ornaments, the tree itself becomes secondary, almost forgotten. Now, shift this metaphor to our lives. Many of us spend time and energy on the “ornaments” — the photos we share on social media, the image we project, the appearances we work hard to maintain. But beneath all the sparkle, are we staying connected to what truly matters? We’re living in a world where people feel like they must create an experience to be seen, rather than actually experiencing the moment itself. Not only does this mean we’re disconnected to the present moment happening around us, but we’re also increasing our stress and anxiety levels to maintain all facets of these appearances. But what if we stripped it back? What if, instead of curating an image, we focused on being present? What if we stopped decorating with excessive trimmings and instead embraced the simplicity of the tree itself? The truth is, it takes a lot more “ornaments” to cover up a little authenticity. When we rely on external validations, it’s a sign we may not be fully at peace with our authentic selves. And that’s okay. It’s human to want connection, validation, and approval. But if we’re spending all our time covering up those needs, we might miss out on the richness of the experience or the chance to connect itself. Perhaps the key is balance. Let’s allow ourselves a few ornaments — a picture here, a shared moment there — but let’s not lose sight of the tree itself. When we focus too much on how we appear to others, we can lose touch with our authentic core. The key to fulfillment isn’t in how we’re seen, but in how we are, in the present, in the moment. Next time you find yourself in a beautiful place, put the phone down for a while. Stop focusing on how to capture the perfect shot, and instead, focus on being there. Because no amount of ornaments can replace the beauty of an authentic, unfiltered self.
